Freak Scene began life as a hare-brained idea that wasn’t really thought through at all. It just sprang from a few mates wanting to play music they liked as mid-life crises beckoned. It started out a shambolic mess, and some might say, hasn’t really got any better. As the fortysomething collective still wanted to go out and get lashed to their soundtrack, they noticed that, so did a lot of other people old enough to know better. With an eclectic playlist of old and new bangers, it started out at Fruit, before moving to The Polar Bear the following year, where it found its home amongst the area’s artists, musicians and writers.
It became something entirely different a couple of years later, when they hit upon the idea of doing covers, but utilizing Hull’s finest musicians from the best bands, throwing them together and hatching an idea. The first was an 80s night which was a right laugh, and it continues to go from strength to strength, having tackled the 90s, 00s, NYC punk, The Smiths, Oasis, Manchester, Joy Division, Pulp, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, The Strokes and many more.
Original bands also regularly feature, and all the musicians add much-needed professionalism to the shoddy DJing on show. It’s become a real, organic communal party that is only about providing a cracking night out with a soundtrack that depends entirely on the DJ’s state of mind or level of inebriation.
