4:15pm - 4:45pm (Saturday)
The rawness of nostalgic early noughties indie is brought back to life by Girl Afraid with lovestruck lyrics and jangly guitars. Filling the space left by the likes of The Libertines and The Kooks, the 4 piece are sure to remind you of youthful days of drinking too much and falling in love. Sam Mellors fronts the band as a maverick outcome of years of John Lennon and Sam Cooke records played on repeat, whose punchy rhythm guitar and authentic vocals rest easily on top of bassist Matty Law's heavy and driving sound. Mason Shillito's complex and unpredictable lead guitar decorates the songs that Sam Matthews, the backbone of the band, holds together with dynamic and impactful beats.
Girl Afraid are a natural sequel to the sentimental sound of the early 2000s, and are all at once rough around the edges and unflawed in their endeavour to bring that sound back.
